ADE HAKIM BY THE HUDSON

Adé Hakim, formerly known as Sixpress (often stylized as 6press), is a rapper hailing from the Bronx borough of New York City. He creates jazz-inspired hip-hop with an optimistic undertone, reminscent of early hip hop like Pharcyde or Souls of Mischief. His debut album On to Better Things featured collaborators such as rapper King Carter and vocalist Cleo Reed. In his newest single 'By the Hudson', the scratchy, repetitive jazz samples evoke a light-heartedness (particularly the metallic piano hook) suiting Ade's loose and breezy style of rap. The drums and the bass feel as if they're underwater - production expands and retracts with various with lo-fi noise and synth sounds. Ade's slurring vocals sit on surface, narrating his Bronx life: "Let my mum know I'm safe, I'm a target in these streets...I just do what I want and it feels accomplishing". -Ellie Rose-Davies
